Latitude for Art is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing opportunities for artists across various locations in Los Angeles. Our mission is to develop creative communities in urban and rural settings with artist residencies and longer term housing projects for artists and seniors.
Our Story
Latitude for Art was established in 2019 and gained its 501(c)(3) status as a California-based non-profit. The initiative was inspired by our founding artist board member, Martin Cox, who witnessed the transformative power of residencies and community-building while operating GilsfjordurArts, an art residency in Iceland.
Our Work
We launched with a pilot artist residency in an established apartment complex in Echo Park, offering residents stunning views of the lake and access to shared gardens within the historic neighborhood of Angeleno Heights. This program hosted solo LA-based artists in 2022-2023, providing them with a unique space to create and connect within a creative community.
Our Expansion
In 2024, Latitude for Art expanded to include events and embedded art residencies at variousĀ locations. Latitude For Art took ownership of a building, and undertook a number of infrastructure upgrades. An important part of our mission is to provide quality low-cost housing to the existing artists and seniors living in the apartment building, and to connect the visiting artists with the long-time creative residents.
The reopening of the improved residency began with visiting artists arriving in April 2025. For the next two years we are focusing on prioritizing artists impacted by the LA Fires who are seeking time and peaceful workspace to make new work in the wake of experiencing terrible loss.
Our Vision
At Latitude for Art, we believe in the power of art to bridge generational gaps and build vibrant, supportive communities. We are committed to providing artists with the resources and spaces they need to thrive, while fostering a dynamic dialogue between artists and the wider community.
Join us in our mission to create and sustain artistic communities that inspire and uplift.
